Port is only on the left side of the boat if you are on the boat and looking forward to the bow, otherwise it is on the right side of the boat if you are looking at the stern. Starboard is on the right side of the boat if you are on the boat looking forward, otherwise it is on the left side.
Port at night is identified by a red light and starboard at night is identified by a green light, both at the bow (or at the cabin top on larger vessels); the stern is identified by a white light. Unless it is a small sailing vessel in which case all three colours (in the same configuration) are displayed at the top of the mast while sailing - if a sailing boat is motoring then same as previous but with an added white "steaming" light half way up the mast, facing forward.
