The H1N1 "Swine Flu" virus is starting to affect tourist numbers, inconveniencing travelers and creating a stigma for some.

Last week for example, the Ministry of Health in Malaysia imposed a scanning requirement on all passengers arriving at ports and airports in Malaysia from: Australia, the United States and the Philippines. The requirement is that all passengers arriving at a port or airport from Australia, the United States and the Philippines shall be required to pass through a thermal scan, which will indicate if the passenger is possibly suffering from the affects of the H1N1 Swine Flu virus.

If a passenger from Australia, the United States and the Philippines is identified by the thermal scan to possibly be suffering from the affects of the H1N1 Swine Flu virus then the Ministry of Health in Malaysia will require the passenger to be tested and, if required, quarantined before being allowed to proceed into Malaysia.

Of course, if you are not suffering from the H1N1 Swine Flu virus or any other medical condition that will be identified by the thermal scan as possibly caused by H1N1 then you will not be inconvenienced in any way.

Our best advice is: if you are sick in any way that inflates your body temperature such that a thermal scan for H1N1 virus might register then don't travel. In fact this is good advice at any time - not just during a swine flu scare.

H1N1 Swine Flu is not only a challenge for travelers to Malaysia. China too has very strict procedures for H1N1 swine flu prevention.
